Monte Palace Hotel in São Miguel, Azores, once a luxurious retreat now stands in eerie silence, shrouded in mystery and decay.

The hotel was built by the company Industria Açoriana Turístico-Hotelereira (IATH) with French and Belgian shareholders. It opened in 1989 with great fanfare, aiming to be a luxurious 5-star retreat. Despite its grand opening, the hotel closed just 18 months later in 1990 due to financial difficulties. It was a shocking turn of events for what was once considered one of the finest hotels in the Azores. Monte Palace Hotel received the award for being Portugal’s finest hotel in the same week it closed its doors.

Since its closure, the hotel has been abandoned and suffered from vandalism. It remains a popular spot for curious visitors and urban explorers, although it is officially off-limits.

Location: The hotel is situated at the Vista do Rei viewpoint, offering stunning views of the twin lakes of Sete Cidades
