The Monte Palace Hotel, located in Sete Cidades on São Miguel Island in the Azores, was once envisioned as a luxury getaway with stunning views over the twin lakes. Opened in 1989, the five-star hotel featured 88 rooms, restaurants, bars, and high-end facilities. However, due to financial difficulties and a lack of tourism demand at the time, the hotel closed just two years later in 1991. Since then, the abandoned building has become a haunting ruin, attracting urban explorers and photographers fascinated by its eerie, decayed state. In recent years, there have been discussions about renovating or repurposing the site, but no concrete plans have been realized yet.
