The abandoned Monte Palace Hotel is located on São Miguel, the largest island of the Azores, an archipelago in the Atlantic belonging to Portugal. The hotel spectacularly sits on one of the mountains surrounding the crater lakes of Sete Cidades, one of the Azores' most famous natural wonders.

The Monte Palace Hotel was built in the 1980s, specifically opening its doors in 1989. The location offered breathtaking views of the lakes and surrounding landscape, but the anticipated influx of tourists failed to materialize. This was partly due to its remote location and often foggy weather conditions, which made access and stays challenging. Within a year of opening, the hotel was closed and abandoned.

Since then, Monte Palace has developed an almost mythical attraction for adventurers, photographers, and urban explorers. The building itself has suffered from vandalism and the ravages of time, with walls covered in graffiti and broken windows. Despite its decayed state, the ruins provide a fascinating glimpse into the transience of human endeavors and the power of nature to reclaim what was once taken from it.
