The Edo period, which began when Tokugawa Ieyasu brought an end to a long era of war and established the Tokugawa shogunate, was a time of peace, public safety, and cleanliness—though the economy rose and fell under the shogunate’s various policies.

Still, despite Japan’s long-held policy of isolation, the country would eventually be pulled into the international arena.

In Part 1 of our Edo Period series, we’ll take a look at the ups and downs within the country during isolation, as well as the unique culture that flourished during this time.
