The streets of Lisbon looked virtually deserted on Wednesday after Portuguese authorities decreed a lockdown in 19 of the city's 24 districts due to an increase in coronavirus cases.

Footage shows the streets of the Portuguese capital empty of people, while restrictions such as the ban of gatherings of over 10 and the closure of some commercial establishments were once again in place.

The approximately 700,000 residents of the quarantined districts will only be able to leave their homes to work, and shop for food or medicine.

According to data collected by Johns Hopkins University, Portugal has recorded 42,454 cases of coronavirus, and 1,579 deaths related to the disease.
