Colombo: A City Woven from the Threads of Empires
Colombo, Sri Lanka's bustling capital, stands today as a modern metropolis, a vibrant tapestry of cultures and influences. Yet beneath the surface of this dynamic city lies a rich history, etched in the footprints of empires that once held sway over its shores. From the ancient kingdom of Kotte to the colonial rule of the Portuguese, Dutch, and British, Colombo has witnessed the rise and fall of civilizations, each leaving their mark on its landscape and its people.
Originally known as Kolomtota, the city served as the primary port for the 15th and 16th-century Kotte kingdom. Its strategic location attracted Arab traders, who called it Kalamba. This cosmopolitan character, however, also drew the attention of the ambitious Portuguese, who landed in 1505, initiating a period of Portuguese dominance that lasted nearly 150 years.
Despite the long Portuguese presence, surprisingly little remains of this era in Colombo. While Portuguese surnames scattered throughout the telephone directory and a handful of Roman Catholic churches and seminaries offer glimpses into the past, the city's physical imprint of this period is remarkably faint.
