This video addresses the second dynasty of the Kings of Portugal, and will cover reigns between 1385 and 1521. The other half of the second dynasty will follow in a later video, together with the third dynasty.

During the late 1400s and early 1500s, Portugal is under the rule of the dynasty of Avis, or Joanina. João, Mestre de Avis, is the first king of this dynasty. Over this century, Portugal begins its ultramarine explorations, and the Portuguese empire will grow to its height, which comes during the reign of Manuel I.

There is also trouble with Castille, as is the norm in Portuguese history until the Early Modern Era, and the development of a humanistic mentality among some of these Renaissance era monarchs, together with practically absolutist rules. Thus is Portugal in the end of the Middle Ages, and in the transition between the medieval and Early Modern periods.

Portugal is accompanied in its exploits by England, an old alliance ratified by the Treaty of Windsor, and confirmed through the marriage of João I to Philippa of Lancaster, daughter of John of Gaunt. Later, the relationship with Castille will improve, and King Manuel I will work alongside Los Reyes Católicos, Isabella and Ferdinand, to achieve mutual purposes.
