This was the day I learnt my waterproofs weren’t waterproof, my limits are not negotiable and sometimes, booking a hotel ahead is a bad idea!
Join me on my Can Am Ryker 600cc as we attempt to ride from Porto in Portugal to Salamanca in Spain. I’m not really feeling it today and not thinking clearly. I do the unthinkable for me and book ahead hotel for the night. Due to disability and chronic illness I usually ride until I need to stop. Ince booked, I then check the mileage and see it’s 233 miles /375km - far too much for me to ride in a day. And on top of this it rains continuously all day. I head east on a road running north of river Douro and cross over to the south side and up a mountain where cloud is so low and visibility poor. I decided to head down and take the motorway where the rain hits harder, the wind blows and floods lead to me aquaplaning several times and having to hold onto my Ryker for dear life.
After a change of clothes in a service station, having discovered my armoured waterproofs are not waterproof, I get back on the motorway for a little longer until I have to pull off and stop 100 miles short of my destination. Luckily, I find a nice Guest House in Guarda for another night in Portugal.
Along the way I also talk about how I use acceptance to help manage my disability, mental health, sobriety and grief.
Come and see this incredibly raw, powerful, and relatable vlog—one that blends adventure, vulnerability, and resilience
