Portugal vs Spain – The Town They Fought Over | Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay

Welcome to Colonia del Sacramento, one of the most beautiful and historic towns in Uruguay.

Just across the Río de la Plata from Buenos Aires, this UNESCO World Heritage site is now a peaceful place full of cobbled streets, museums and colonial buildings. But a few hundred years ago, it was anything but peaceful.

Founded by the Portuguese in 1680, Colonia became a strategic battleground between Portugal and Spain, with the town changing hands several times over the next century.

Today it's one of the most popular day trips from Buenos Aires, with ferries bringing hundreds of visitors across the river every day.

In this video I wander through the old city gates, explore the famous Street of Sighs, visit the lighthouse, discover some unusual museums (including an origami museum!), and learn about the smuggling that once made this town thrive.

I am an older backpacker travelling the world proving that backpacking is not just for the younger generation.
