Check out our trip to Funchal and one of the most exciting commutes in the world!

With over 100 years of history, the best and most exciting way to get down from the town of Monte in Madeira, to the city of Funchal is by wicker basket.

This journey is now one of the top things to do when tourists visit Madeira, and we can see why...we did it when we were on the Marella Explorer cruise ship, exploring the Canary Islands including Madeira and Morocco.

How to get there?
- take the cable car from the Funchal coast, 3200m up to Monte
- this cost us €12.50 each and was free for Ollie

What can you see in Monte?
- there's an entrance to the Tropical Garden of Monte Palace (extra charge)
- a further cable car to the Botanical Gardens (extra charge)
- two delightful cafe's with stunning views
- the Carreiros do Monte wicker basket ride!

What is the Carreiros do Monte?
- an historical route down to Funchal in a wicker basket
- over 100 years of history travelling this way
- cost us €30 for the two of us and Ollie was free

Any top tips?
- Get there EARLY as even though we weren't there in peak season, we queued for 1.5 hours to have our turn
- open Mon to Sat 9am to 5pm - closed on Sundays
- we walked the rest of the way down to Funchal where the basket ride ended, but its STEEP and definitely worth getting a taxi to save time
