At the turn of the 20th century, José Luís Constantino Dias—a Portuguese emigrant who built his fortune on coffee plantations in São Tomé and Príncipe and was ennobled as the 1st Marquis of Vale Flor—chose a rise in Lisbon’s Alcântara district to erect a Parisian-style palace. Ground was broken at the end of the 19th century on lands he acquired around 1890, signaling the birth of Palácio Vale Flor .

The initial vision fell to Italian architect Nicola Bigaglia, who led construction until 1908. Portuguese architect José Ferreira da Costa then took the helm, completing the main structure by 1910. Many of the finest decorative touches—carved stonework, sculpted details and overall stylistic flourishes—are credited to Miguel Ventura Terra .

Between 1910 and 1915, a team of interior designers (Constantino Fernandes, Carlos Reis and Eugénio Cotrim) transformed the halls with marble wainscoting, frescoed ceilings and vibrant stained-glass windows. For decades, the Vale Flor family lived amid these sumptuous rooms, hosting private balls and family gatherings in a setting meant to rival the great European courts .

By the late 20th century the palace passed from private hands: in 1992 the Pestana Group acquired it, and under architect Manuel Tainha it was painstakingly restored and expanded into a luxury hotel, opening in 1997. That same year, it was classified as a Portuguese National Monument—today’s Pestana Palace stands as both a living hotel and a preserved slice of 19th-century Portuguese aristocracy.
