What happens when a nearly 400-year-old port wine cellar becomes a five-star hotel? You get the Tivoli Kopke Porto Gaia, one of the most unique hotel experiences in Portugal.
Kopke was founded in 1638 by a German diplomat from Hamburg – making it the oldest port wine house in the world. Today, the hotel is built from the restoration of these centuries-old cellars, with over 2 million litres of port wine aging in barrels inside the building.
In this video, I’ll take you through the cellar hallways (with windows into the actual barrels), a sommelier-led tasting, dinner at the 1638 Restaurant by three-Michelin-starred Chef Nacho Manzano, and port cocktails at the Sky Bar overlooking the Luís I Bridge.
Plus – the secret Portuguese drink you need to try: white port with tonic. You’re welcome.
