Technically, Madeira and the Azores are part of Portugal. But once you arrive on these islands, it quickly becomes clear that they feel like completely different worlds.

Rising from volcanic activity in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, these islands share very little with mainland Portugal — both in their geography and geology.

And that creates something truly special:
