Lisbon, also known as Portuguese Lisboa, is the capital and largest city of Portugal, and the center of the Lisbon metropolitan area. It is located in western Portugal on the estuary of the Tagus River and is the westernmost capital in continental Europe. Lisbon serves as the country's main port, commercial, political, and tourist hub. The city's name has roots in ancient Olisipo and has been associated with the legacy of Ulysses, the hero in Homer's Odyssey, Elisha, a supposed grandson of Abraham, and Phoenician colonists. Lisbon's historical significance stems from its natural harbor, known for being one of the most beautiful in the world. The city has an area of 33 square miles (85 km^2) and a population of 544,851 (2021), with the metropolitan area having 2,871,133 residents.
Once a remote location considered to be the edge of the known world, Lisbon became a hub for Portuguese exploration by the 15th century. The city center was devastated by an earthquake in 1755, but was rebuilt by the Marquês de Pombal. Today, the city is a modern metropolis with colorful houses, elegant parks, and gardens. It was designated a European City of Culture in 1994 and hosted the World's Fair in 1998. This event led to the city's largest renewal project since the 1755 earthquake, including the construction of the Vasco da Gama Bridge, a combined road-rail bridge, and improvements to the transportation infrastructure. The World's Fair also spurred the development of an oceanarium, marinas, hotels, commercial centers, and entertainment venues along the Tagus River.
