The land border between Spain and Portugal reopened with a symbolic gathering of leaders in Badajoz on Wednesday morning, after more than three months of closure due to COVID-19.
The King of Spain, Felipe VI, the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, the President of Portugal Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and the Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa, participated in the event alongside local authorities.
During the event chants were heard against the monarch and in favour of a republic.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic both countries have only allowed the transit of goods and workers across the border, among a few other exceptions, during the last three months.
