Portugal: Flying to Madeira after Covid lockdown | Ep. 14

After staying for 4 month in (mainland) Portugal, we got finally on a plane from Lisbon to Funchal to get to our next destination on our slow travel journey. Our flight departed early morning getting us quite early to the airport, which was more or less empty. While we were alone at the luggage checkin, we joined a short queue at the security check and found ourself within a small group of other travellers, waiting for the announcement of the gate. Once we arrived at the gate and got closer to actual boarding, the number of like minded travellers quickly went beyond our expectations as it turned out that the flight was fully booked.

The flight was short and comfortable, with everyone staying in their seats, and wearing masks (with the short exception of siping on a drink). We landed safely at Cristiano Ronaldo Madeira International Airport, commonly known as Madeira Airport or Funchal Airport, which is located at the south cost of the island with a runway built on columns into the sea.

It took us just a few minutes from leaving the airplane to collecting our luggage which got us faster than expected to the mandatory Covid-19 test which is provided for free for all travellers that haven't been tested within 72 hours prior to arrival. While the test was a bit uncomfortable, the entire process was very well organised and we felt really welcome by a host of super friendly airport staff. We even got each a little goody bag with a locally sourced banana, water and a cute face mask.

We were asked to stay at our accommodation until we would receive our test results, which took just about 6 hours to arrive.
