Port wine capital
The origins of Peso da Régua remain unknown, but legend has it that a countryside Roman house named "Villa Reguela" existed here. However, it boomed from 1756 due to the creation of the General Company of Alto Douro Vine Agriculture. Marquis de Pombal, who was the founder of the world's first wine region, created this institution. The Company's warehouses were thus built in Peso da Régua, and the first "wine fairs" were held, stimulating the creation of several businesses, board houses, game rooms and other important facilities. Typical "Rabelo" boats set sail from here along Douro river, carrying wine barrels to Vila Nova de Gaia, where the wine aged in the wine cellars. It became a town on February 3rd 1837 and a city on August 14th 1985. In 1998, it was classified as International Vine and Wine City. Its natural landscapes are absolutely unique, since Alto Douro wine region was classified by UNESCO as World Heritage. The city has numerous leisure infrastructures, such as a pedestrian area, tennis courts, swimming pools and fishing equipments, handicraft stores, restaurants and bars. Tourism boats sail from and to its river quay through Douro river. The council is rich in historical heritage with several manor houses, small palaces and the "quintas" of Port wine producers, most of them opened to the public, several religious architecture monuments and the Railway Station, officially opened on July 14th 1879.
