ÓBIDOS: It is a small town near to Lisbon, situated along a limestone ridge and is completely encircled by ancient town walls. There are traditionally painted houses, a labyrinth of narrow cobbled streets and a medieval castle, which has guarded the region for over 800 years. It is also renowned for high quality Portuguese liqueur ‘Ginjinha’ - cherry brandy served in a chocolate cup which you get to eat.
NAZARÉ: Located about half way between Lisbon and Porto, Nazaré, named after the Biblical “Nazareth” in the 4th century, is Portugal’s most famous fishing village. It is world-famous for the giant waves that hit the coast every winter from October to February attracting surfers and spectators from all over the world.
THE MONASTERY OF BATALHA: This Gothic Monastery (“The Monastery of the Battle”) was commissioned by King João in gratitude for the decisive victory in the battle of Aljubarrota (1385) and the grand designs took over a hundred years to construct. It was the most famous battle in Portuguese history, which ensured the country its independence and started a new royal dynasty.
FÁTIMA: This town has one of the most important catholic shrines in the world dedicated to Virgin Mary. Fatima’s fame is due to the Apparitions of Our Lady of the Rosary (also known as Our Lady of Fatima) that appeared to three shepherd children of Fatima; Lucia dos Santos and her two younger cousins, Francisco and Jacinta. Between May and October of 1917, the three children witnessed several apparitions. The last one, on October 13th, was confirmed by a miracle witnessed by 60,000 people known in the catholic world as “the day the sun danced.”
