This event organized by the Malacca Portuguese Eurasian Association (MPEA) was held at the Portuguese Settlement in Malacca, Malaysia to commemorate 500 years of the Portuguese Legacy in Malaysia and South-East-Asia.
The Portuguese captured Malacca in 1511 under the command of Alfonso D'Albuquerque and it remained in the Portuguese hands for 130 years untill Malacca fell to the Dutch in 1641.
This 130 years of Portuguese rule has left its mark and influence on the Language, Music, Arts, Culture, Cuisine, Fauna and Flora of Malaysia.
The descendants of these early Portuguese are found in Many parts of Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, UK, US, Macau, Sri Lanka and many other parts of the world.
They form the Majority of the ethnic minority group reffered to as Portuguese-Eurasian, which include the local descendants of Dutch, British, and other colonial powers.
Though small, this community with its cultural core based in the Portuguese Settlement, Malacca, through the appealing nature of their history and Cultural Heritage play an important contributory role in the tourism industry of Malaysia.
They speak a variation of Portuguese antique in some respects, to be officially know as 'Papia Portuguese Malacca' traditionally called 'Papia Cristang' or the Malacca Portuguese Language.
This video depicts the exuberance of their Culture and temperament which shows an amalgamation of Portuguese, Eurasian, Malay elements and influences.
