When planning your first solo trip, pick a city where you speak the language, are culturally more comfortable and a city with great public transportation.
Take it from a few travel experts Bustle spoke with.
Here are 5 of the best cities for solo travelers.
1. Lisbon, Portugal – it’s safe, cheap and offers plenty of activities.
It’s the 3rd safest country, and a glass of wine or beer can be under $5.
2. Sydney, Australia – exotic enough to be exciting, yet familiar enough not to be unnerving.
Just plan for a long stay as flights can be expensive and it takes forever to get there.
3. Washington, D.C. – no language barrier to worry about in our nation’s capital.
Museums are best enjoyed alone, and D.C. has more than 20 to choose from, most of which are free, according to Travel + Leisure.
4. Paris, France – it’s walkable, easy to navigate and has great mass transit options.
Speaking of museums, hit up the Louvre on a Friday night when it’s less busy.
5. Tokyo, Japan – it’s one of the safest cities in the world and has a great food scene.
The language barrier isn’t such a big deal once you realize a lot of things like menus have an English version or come with an illustration.
